The Hispanic Employment Program was created to actively help to advance opportunities for Hispanic Americans, including working with individuals and educational, business, and community groups serving Hispanic Americans, to the extent permitted by law.

The Hispanic Employment Program Manager is heavily involved with issues of recruitment, retention, and development of the Center's Hispanic population. He also works very closely with the Center's Hispanic Advisory Committee for Employees (HACE) to inform the Center Director and other senior managers about issues directly impacting the Center's Hispanic population.

HACE is comprised of Hispanic employees from each Directorate on Center. They meet regularly to discuss issues concerning the Hispanic community at Goddard, and share their issues, comments, and concerns with Goddard senior management, including the Center Director.

Goddard's Hispanic employees are also very active in local Hispanic community, sharing Goddard resources with students and teachers. GoddardÕs Spanish-speaking employees serve as bilingual judges for science fairs, speakers for career fairs and other activities, and hosts for on-site visits.

One outreach program, the NASA/Stevens Institute of Technology Telementoring Program, pairs members of Goddard's Hispanic community with science teachers of predominantly Hispanic students in northern New Jersey. Goddard employees serve as mentors, role models, and resources to the teachers. Most of the interaction is done via videoconferencing and e-mail, although the Goddard employees personally visit the classroom at least once per year.

Goddard Hispanic Heritage Club (GHHC)

Many of the social activities that promote the various Hispanic cultures, including the Cinco de Mayo celebration, Paella Night, and the Three Kings Day Fiesta are sponsored by GHHC. The GHHC exists to share and promote the Hispanic cultures with all Goddard employees, as well as to support the local Hispanic community with educational and other resources.

The purpose of GHHC is to:

  • Provide a medium by which members can share and promote their culture.
  • Serve as a sponsoring organization to arrange social events and recognition ceremonies.
  • Provide support/information to new Hispanic employees at Goddard.
  • Provide activities to encourage young people to pursue careers in engineering, math, science, etc.
