EEO Center-Sponsored Training

Goddard has solicited and sponsored excellent, structured EEO training for management and employees. At Wallops, as well as at the Greenbelt campus, we contracted with Rushford & Associates to provide new and seasoned managers the opportunity for face-to-face interactive, participatory classroom seminars. Code 120 is very satisfied with the depth, range and experience of the RA firm.

As a consequence of a year-long dialogue within Goddard's E O Council, EOPO and OHR cooperatively researched and identified an EEO distance learning option for managers who desired the schedule flexibility of a self-paced, private, non-classroom setting for EEO refreshing. We've examined two, available optional platforms, the USDA Graduate School and the newly released EEOC courses.

We've chosen the USDA-Amerischool EEO venue and contracted for 140 pilot slots for self-paced access by a select list of GSFC managers and supervisors. The expected completion time is approximately 15 self-paced hours and the closing/completion date for all participants is May 2002.

For non-supervisory staff and employees, we contracted with OD Systems, Inc. for the ABC's Of EEO Processing course. We had five, 1/2-day offerings for employees. The course was to familiarize interested employees on how to recognize discrimination, file and process complaints if necessary, optional avenues like ADR & Mediation, and what to expect from the process.

NASA HQ Minority Profile Brochure

NASA HQ SEPM contacted Goddard about highlighting and showcasing some outstanding NASA-Goddard minority engineers and scientists in an upcoming agency wide Minority Profile Brochure. The AAPM and HAPM cooperatively served as the collectors and conduits of nominated employees forwarded to NASA-HQ for this effort.

Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conferences - Baltimore, MD

GSFC AAPM successfully promoted, wrote and nominated Ms. Jacqueline Mims and Dr. Nigel Ziyad, two exemplary GSFC African-American professional employees. These nominations resulted in their receipt and acceptance of BEY national award recognitions at two successive Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conferences (2000 & 2001) in Baltimore, Maryland.

These conferences, previously unattended by NASA-Goddard, allowed us the opportunities for unprecedented presence and promotion of NASA and Goddard as viable areas for potential future employment. We promoted and had inclusion of the Center Director Al Diaz for two successive years at these annual activities. This increased Center and Agency presence at the Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conferences in Baltimore Maryland (2000 & 2001), was accomplished by establishing a seated presence and finally by having the GSFC Center Director Al Diaz's profile, picture and brief biography published in the official conference brochure and having him seated on the VIP presentation podium.

Additionally, the Center Director was awarded the honor of presenting to his peer, Center Director Donald Campbell of Glenn Research, a Federal Career Achievement Award in a VIP evening ceremony at the Meyerhoff Theatre in Baltimore Maryland.

First Responder Interventions

The AAPM successfully served as informal intervention for at least six (6) on site instances of possible and potential discrimination complaint cases.

NASA HQ Accessions Request

Code 120 served as the contact and liaison for the NASA HQ/ G. Reese - "Request for Data on Accessions From Minority Institutions (Sept.10, 2001)". This data is already compiled and is ready for secondary analysis.

GSFC Career Development Panels

The AAPM co-sponsored, planned and promoted, in concert with OHR, several career development venues for GSFC employees.

On Wednesday, February 28, 2001, a NASA/Goddard Career Development Panel was sponsored during BHM. Our panel consisted of Goddard's on-site subject matter staff, including Dr. Charles Hicks, Mr. Rick Obeinschain, Ms. Gail Williams and Ms. Sharon Johnson.

As a follow-up and continuation of the theme, we planned, promoted and sponsored Defining Expectations - an on-site employee focused career workshop, conducted by Dr. Charles Hicks.

Institute on Race, Power and Privilege: A Goddard Pilot

The Institute was a 4-day in-depth learning experience for African Americans and European Americans who want to develop skills and perspective helpful for managing change in the work setting leading to equity. The Goddard participants explored concepts of race, power and privilege. The workshop sessions were facilitated by the multiracial (African American and European American) team of four men and women professionals from the Center for the Study of White American Culture, Inc. The program used a variety of techniques that emphasized experiential learning. Topics that will be addressed include the racial structure of U.S. society, how this racial structure shapes individual experience, how this structure is mediated by organizational and societal cultures, and how experiences of African Americans and European Americans differ and converge in relation to processes of racialization.

CAAO: Council of African-American Organizations

CAAO is a forum that allows representatives of the resident African-American organizations to meet periodically to brainstorm information on the issues affecting the status of African-American employees on Center.

Center Director's Executive Initiative on African-American Employees

Goddard's Executive Management Initiative on African-American Employees was created to address the huge discrepancy in the trust and perceptions of minorities, particularly African-Americans, regarding systemic workplace ethics issues and the accountability of their management.

African Development and Technology Group/Code 900 - Howard Univ. Pilot

This initiative identified research opportunities and/or projects where NASA technology could be applied or redirected to contribute to U.S. activities in African states. This effort led to the development of a pilot project involving a detailed Goddard employee whose role was to serve as a conduit of information and planning between Howard University and Goddard's Code 900 - Earth Sciences Directorate.
